Jean Roberts founded the Midland Quilters Guild in 1979. The Guild’s initial membership of 28 has expanded to over 100.
The Guild’s purpose is to bring together individuals who are interested in quilting activities to share, to learn, and to teach others with the same interest. Members of the guild have been active in demonstrating their craft to the public at various activities in the area. We regularly participate in the Arts Council of Midland, displays at Midland County Libraries, and the Museum of the Southwest.
The guild holds a quilt show in October every other year, with 2021 being a quilt show year. It is an exhibit of the extraordinary talents, skills, and creativity of the guild members. As in the past, the Arts Council of Midland, Midland’s Mayor, and our guilds past show chairmen present ribbons to their favorite quilt. We have added the Gusher award, where a business can present a ribbon and a monetary amount to the quilt of their choice. In addition to the show, the guild raffles a quilt made by members. Items made or donated by guild members are available for purchase at either the Silent Auction or the Quilters Market.
The guild is active in various community service projects dating back to 1988. Quilts are donated to Habitat for Humanity Homes, Hospice, Hope House/Allison Cancer Center, Rape Crisis/Child Advocacy, Senior Link, Safe Place and Quilts of Valor.
The Midland Quilters Guild has an open membership. The membership year begins in January, and the annual dues are $20.00 if paid by the February meeting. Dues are $25.00 for new members and after the February deadline.
Guild pins are available for $5.00 from the chapter secretary. Members are listed in the Yearbook and receive monthly newsletters. They receive a membership card which is used at quilt and fabric shops for discounts locally and away from home.
Chapter Meeting The monthly meeting starts at 7:00 p.m. on the second Tuesday of each month with a business meeting followed by a quilt-related program. Thirty minutes before the chapter meeting, we greet visitors, new members, and talk with fellow quilters. Refreshments are provided. Show and Tell is encouraged at each monthly meeting. Members enjoy seeing what fellow quilters are working on or projects done in a workshop/class. Monthly meetings are a great time for exchanging ideas for future projects. The July and December meetings are Saturday luncheons.
The executive board gathers together on the first Tuesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. Meetings are open to all members. Quilting Bees The Tuesday Morning Bee meet each week at 9 a.m. at the Thompson House. Members can work on guild-related projects or participate in community service projects.
